Invite people to help run your site
Add co-owners and editors to a site. Their console role also decides what they can do inside the site's own admin.
Owners and editors
Every member of a site is either an owner or an editor.
Owner
Owners have full control of the site. In the console, only an owner can:
- Rename the site or change its slug
- Connect domains and set the primary domain (and remove domains)
- Manage billing
- Invite, remove, and change the role of teammates
- Delete the site
When an owner opens the site admin, they sign in as a full site administrator — every section, including users and site settings (branding, weather location, and so on).
Editor
Editors focus on content. They can open the site and its admin, but the team, domains, billing, rename, and delete controls in the console are owner-only.
When an editor opens the site admin, they sign in as an editor: they can manage news content (articles, feeds, categories, regions, pages, and the newsletter) and community sections (events, contests, closings, obituaries, sports, and mugshots). Ad tools, radio stations, the user list, and site settings stay reserved for administrators.
A console owner becomes a site-admin administrator; a console editor becomes a site-admin editor. There's no separate password for the site admin — see Getting started.
Invite someone
- 1Open your site in the console and go to Team (owners only).
- 2Under Invite someone, enter their email and choose Owner or Editor.
- 3We email them an invitation and also show you a shareable link — hand it over however you like. Each invite is good for 7 days.
Re-inviting the same email replaces its previous pending invite (the old link stops working). You can revoke any pending invite from the same page.
Accepting an invite
The person you invited opens the link, signs in (or creates a free console account first), and accepts. That adds the site to their dashboard with the role you chose. Accepting an owner invite always grants owner; an editor invite never demotes someone who is already an owner.
Removing people and leaving
- An owner can remove any member, including themselves, as long as another owner remains.
- An editorcan remove only themselves — that's how you leave a site you no longer work on.
- Changing a member's role (owner ⇄ editor) is owner-only.
The last-owner rule
You can't remove or demote the last owner of a site — that would leave it with nobody in charge. To hand a site off, promote another member to owner first, then step down. (If you truly want to shut a site down, delete it from its Danger zone instead.)
